The songs on this record are the best 4 songs we've written, and they perfectly epitomize the kind of music we want to make.

We’re making a new record. It’s going to be called “Black Music.” Here’s the track listing:

Lipstick Colony

Make Sure It Hurts

I’ve Got Friends

Losing My Nerve (+ video)

Bonus track: Make Sure It Hurts – Le Concorde Kick Mix

We’ve been working with producer/mixer/engineer Mark Needham (The Killers, My Chemical Romance, Neon Trees) for the past couple of months. Stephen Becker AKA Le Concorde also lent some production to “Lipstick Colony,” in addition to remixing “Make Sure It Hurts.” Another Steve (Hall) of Future Disc did the mastering.

Steve Coy and Mark Needham go over mixing notes. Photo by Stephen Becker.

There’s an old recording industry saying–”If it ain’t perfect, it’s a demo.” While we already had pretty good recordings of all of these songs, we wanted to have them be the best they could possibly be. So we re-tracked many of the parts, added some new ones, and had all the songs re-mixed. We wanted a perfect representation of our sound, and these 4 songs are it.

That’s also why the record is called “Black Music.” The songs on this record are the best 4 songs we’ve written, and they perfectly epitomize the kind of music we want to make. So why not just make a self-titled record? Because “Listen To Black Music” is a provocative catch phrase, silly goose.

If a kickass rock band drops an EP in the forest, but no one’s there to hear it, did it truly rock? Behind that butchered cliché lurks a music industry truth: All bands needs good marketing. That’s why we’re excited to say we’ve joined the High Voltage family! They’ll be helping us get our music out to as many people as possible. In addition to all the marketing stuff they do, they also produce a great quarterly magazine.
Straight out of Long Beach is Bethpage Black, a four-man self-proclaimed “sickle-pop” band that offers up teen angstitious alternative rock with shredding guitars and aggressive rhythmic beats. Frontman Matt Carmichael’s wailing vocals don’t dance but crash in perfect synchronicity with Davin Givhan’s grinding guitar while the drums and bass set the crimson emblazoned backdrop for the pair. Drawing inspiration from The Used and 30 Seconds to Mars, Bethpage Black worked with local music legend, Ikey Owens (The Mars Volta), to produce their debut EP, Opera-Comique. The EP holds seven tracks that could easily be at home on any Fast & Furious or Transformers Hollywood soundtrack. Quickly generating hype their tunes have been featured regularly on KROQ’s Sunday night Locals Only. Bethpage Black will be turning green this St. Patty’s day for an 18+ show at Key Club in West Hollywood.

by Stacy Davies, OC Weekly

Self-proclaimed “face-melting rockers” Bethpage Black are one of those unsigned local acts who deserve some love. Named after the U.S. Open golf course, the Long Beach-based power-pop quintet shun what they call ?“tragically in-touch-with-their-feelings neighborhood emo bands.” While some of their tunes skate perilously along the rock/emo line (such as “Sixteen Candles”), a healthy infusion of alt-rock (echoes of Dirty Pretty Things vibe through “Demyelination”) keeps them from falling into the icky abyss. Catch them at the Art Theatre and see if there’s a bite in the buzz.

As the venue filled a little more with people, the next band set up equipment
and tuned guitars and check-checked into the mics. This band
was Bethpage Black, and with five tall guys with facial hair and
Adam’s apples (and one with a really sweet afro), they stood in
stark comparison to the infantile Modern Drone. They had a
heavier, more metal influenced sound, and I immediately related
them to The Mars Volta, Alien Ant Farm, and My Chemical Romance
(the good qualities of My Chemical Romance, that is). The
vocalist, Matt Carmichael, was impressive: he owned the stage and
had the powerful voice necessary to front a heavy-rock band.
He reminded me of a line from Almost Famous, where the lead singer,
Jeff Bebe, is talking to Russell Hammond, the guitarist, and says,
“I work just as hard or harder than anybody on that stage. You know
what I do? I connect. I get people off. I look for the guy who
isn’t getting off, and I make him get off.” This is all I
could think of watching this front-man making wonderful, terrifying
eye contact with each individual in the crowd, sweating and
writhing and craning his neck to meet the microphone and belting
out lines and lyrics. “Not to be upstaged was the rest of the band
who provided the gritty and tenacious songs. They played
skillfully and knowingly, and their small details (i.e. a trumpet)
made a difference. Steve Coy on the drums was in his own
little percussive world, providing a thundering heartbeat to the
songs and the set as a whole. Basically, Bethpage Black made
me miss my days of playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater (and by playing I
mean watching my older brothers play) and listening to Sugarcult
and Taking Back Sunday and feeling hardcore ‘cause I was rocking
some Converse.”

The OC Music Awards were last Tuesday at Detroit Bar, so a couple of us went to check it out. And lo and behold, who was there but KROQ’s Kat Corbett. We dashed out to the Blackmobile to get a CD to give to her in the hopes she might play it on Locals Only. 3 days later, we got an email from Kat notifying us that our trip to the OC was worth it.
