Bethpage Black

Black History

You might think of Long Beach, CA, from whence 4-piece rock band Bethpage Black came, as a haven for hip-hop, reggae-funk jam bands or quirky, jangly indie-folk-rock-electro-whatever-pop. But BpB (as the kids call them) are forging a musical path that’s decidedly different from the Snoop Doggs, Sublimes and Avi Buffaloes of the region.

“We call it ‘Sickle Pop,’” explains drummer-songwriter Steve Coy. “It’s aggressive pop-rock with a slight metal edge.”

The songs on their debut EP, Opéra-Comique, reflect this sensibility–and a variety of influences from 30 Seconds To Mars and The Used to Brahms and Bizet. From Matt Carmichael’s powerhouse vocals and Davin Givhan’s prodigious guitar shredding talents to Vivien Larena’s tasteful bass lines and Coy’s precise, aggressive drumming, their talent sets Bethpage Black apart from all the rest of their local music scene.

But the band doesn’t eschew their roots entirely, enlisting local legend Ikey Owens of The Mars Volta to mix their debut EP. Since its release, the band has steadily built momentum and a dedicated following, with the single “Losing My Nerve” garnering regular play on KROQ’s Locals Only. In 2012, the band will release a new self-titled EP produced by Mark Needham (The Killers, My Chemical Romance, Neon Trees). While their birthplace will always be Long Beach, it won’t be long before Bethpage Black belong to the world.
